How to choose nipple covers

A nipple cover is the only garment judged entirely on whether you can tell it is there. Everything below is about the edge, because the edge is what shows.

The only job it has

Under a thin white shirt or a mesh top, what betrays a cover is never the middle — it is the rim. A hard edge catches the light and prints a circle through the fabric. A feathered edge, thin enough to blur into skin, does not.

So the first thing to look at is not the shade or the shape. It is whether the piece tapers at the outside or stops abruptly.

Silicone or fabric

Silicone is reusable, washable, and can be moulded with a tapered rim. It warms to skin temperature, so it stops reading as a separate object after a minute. It is also the only kind that survives a full evening of dancing.

Fabric covers are single-use pads with an adhesive back. They are cheap and they are fine under a thick jumper, but the stitched or cut edge sits proud of the skin and they lift at the corner once you sweat.

If the outfit is sheer, silicone. If the outfit is opaque and you have one in a drawer, fabric will do.

How big

Bigger than instinct suggests. A cover that ends just past the areola creates a visible ring exactly where the eye goes. A wider one spreads the transition over more skin and disappears.

Shade

Match the skin around the cover, not the nipple itself. The point is for the edge to vanish into the surrounding skin, so a shade that matches your chest is right even if it looks wrong against the areola. We make four: Porcelain, Nude, Caramel and Cocoa.

Applying them

1. Clean, dry skin. No moisturiser, no oil, no fake tan still developing — adhesive silicone grips skin, not the film sitting on top of it.
2. Peel from the corner of the storage film, never from the middle. Pulling from the centre stretches the adhesive and leaves a dull patch that never grips as well again.
3. Place centred, then press outward from the middle to the rim. Working outward pushes the air out; pressing the whole thing down at once traps a bubble under the edge.
4. Hold ten seconds. Body heat is what sets the grip.

Keeping them

Wash after every wear in warm water with a drop of mild soap, fingertips only — no cloth, no sponge, nothing abrasive. Air dry face up, then back onto the film. Stored properly they are good for up to 50 wears.
